What is an agreement?

An agreement is a contract between a parent and a child that declares an amount of kudos necessary to earn a specified reward.

For example:

  1. A child or parent proposes an agreement where the child earns $10 when they earn 200 kudos
  2. The non-initiating party is sent a message requesting approval
  3. If denied, the initiating party is sent a message and the agreement is deleted
  4. If approved, when the child earns 200 kudos and they redeem their reward, the parent is sent a message. The fulfillment will show up under the Redeemed tab in the app as a reminder to fulfill their end of the agreeement
  • Agreements can be initiated by a parent or child and must be approved by the non-initiating party
  • A parent and child can have multiple agreements at the same time
  • Agreements can be configured to repeat after the contract terms have been met and the reward has been redeemed
  • At this time, agreeements cannot be revised. If denied, you must propose a new agreement

What is a managed device and why should I care?

A managed device is any device (phone, iPad, computer, DVD player, etc) that you protect and/or limit using the Kudoso App, Router or Plug.

Devices that can install the Kudoso app - iPad, iPhone and Android devices, if managed, can protect your child through internet filtering and by enforcing screen time limitations.

Other devices that you want to manage can be controlled via the Kudoso Router (for limiiting internet access) and/or the Kudoso Plug (for turning the device on or off).

When you log into the Kudoso app on an iPhone or iPad initially, you will be prompted with the following dialog:

If you click "Yes", the app will give you instructions on how to use the Kudoso Konfigurator to configure your device for management.

If you click "No", you will not be prompted again to manage your device. If you change your mind, you can navigate in the app to Dashboard > Settings > Devices to add a managed device.

If you click "Ask Me Later", you will be prompted the next time you log in.

Can I change an agreement?

As a parent or a child, PRIOR to approving an agreement, you can edit the terms and submit the revision to the other party for approval. The other party can then approve or deny the agreement. If denied, that agreement is deleted.

Conversely, if you propose an agreement that you no longer want to honor, it is up to the other party to deny that agreement. If they have already approved it, the contract stands.

What is the difference between Daily Limit and Daily Limit Max?

The Daily Limit represents the amount of screen time that you allow your child for each day. It is configurable per child and per day.

The Daily Limit Max is the absolute maximum amount of screen time that you allow for the day INCLUDING any screen time above the Daily Limit that the child purchases with kudos. This setting is also configurable per child and per day.

For example, you set the Daily Limit to 2 hours and the Daily Limit Max to 3 hours. This means the child may use up to 2 hours on that day but also has permission to buy up to 1 additional hour of screen time if they have enough Kudos.

How does Kudoso protect my family outside of our home?

How does Kudoso protect my family outside of our home?

A device with the Kudoso app installed can be configured as a managed device. The Kudoso app enforces your screen time limits and filters on managed devices no matter what network your children are connected to.

How does Kudoso control the screen time across all the devices in my home?

Devices with the Kudoso app installed can be managed to enforce screen time limits. Kudoso comes with preset limits or you can customize your own.

Electronic devices that are plugged into a Kudoso Smart Plug can also be managed by the Kudoso app to enforce screen time limits.

Will I get the internet filtering if I don't buy the router?

Yes! Kids access the Kudoso Safe Browser from their dashboard.

Use our simple internet filter presets for each child or completely customize the filtering you feel your children need. Customize by allowing or blocking any website based on its url, category or phrase.

If you want to filter the internet content for all the devices in your home, even those that friends bring over, then buy the router.

What if my child marks off their Tasks without actually doing them?

A future feature of Kudoso is to offer verification for completed tasks. This way, kudos would not be credited until a parent verfies that the task is complete.

Verification mode is optional.

Can I block specific apps?

Absolutely!  On managed devices we support soft-locking.  Soft Locking is the ability to allow, restrict or block applications, and YOU control those settings.  Kudoso has setup a few defaults, but most applications are initially in the RESTRICTED state, meaning that they are only available to a child when they are using their screen time (ie: they have started a screen time activity).  One of the best features of app restictions on Kudoso is that the restrictions follow the child, regardless of the device they are using.  Additionaly, each child can (and does) have their own unique app restrictions.

Here are the three settings and what they mean:

ALLOWED: When an app is allowed, that means it is ALWAYS accessbile UNLESS the device is also set to HARD LOCKING (which is off by default).

RESTRICTED: When an app is restricted, that means it is BLOCKED when the child is not in an active screen time activity, and it is ALLOWED when they are in an active screen time activity.  Starting the screen time activity UNLOCKS the device and the applications.

BLOCKED: When an app is blocked, that means it is NEVER accessible to that child, regardless of their allowed screen time.

Can I use the router without the app?

You will need the Kudoso app installed on at least ONE device that a parent can access, this is how the Kudoso system is setup and managed.  So you CAN use just the Kudoso Router in your home and not install the Kudoso App on your children's devices, but you would be missing out on much of what Kudoso offers (and we'd be a little sad).

Do I have to buy a Kudoso Router?

The Kudoso app will filter internet content on managed devices that are subscribed through your account.

If you wish to filter the internet on all devices that enter your home, even those that are not managed by the Kudoso app, you need to buy a Kudoso Router.

What happens when my child is out of screen time for the day?

There are two limits you can set for your child each day.

The Daily Limit represents the amount of screen time that you allow your child for each day.

The Daily Limit Max is the absolute maximum amount of screen time that you allow for the day INCLUDING any screen time above the Daily Limit that the child purchases with kudos.

So, if your child runs out of screen time for the day, he/she can buy additional time up to their Daily Limit Max if they have the kudos to do so. If not, they can perform tasks to earn more kudos.

How do I un-manage a device?

When you make a device un-managed, that means Kudoso will no longer enforce Screen Time limits on that device.

To make a device unmanaged, you will use the Parent interface on your Kudoso app.  Just follow these istructions starting on the Parent dashboard:

  1. Access the slide-out menu by clicking the "hamburger" icon in the upper left hand corner of the application.
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Devices
  4. Find the device listed under the MANAGE tab that you would like to unmanage and click it
  5. Click the large, red "Make Device Unmanaged" button

The device is now unmanaged, for iOS devices, the restrictions are removed immediately, but for computers and Android devices, you'll need to login as a PARENT to the Kudoso app ON THAT DEVICE one last time so that the updated settings are applied.

How do I set up a new iOS device to be managed by Kudoso?

We have worked very hard to make setting up Kudoso on iOS devices as simiple as possible.  To do this, we built a helper program called Konfigurator that performs most of the work needed.  You still need to do a few things, but its really easy and broken down to two parts.  The first part is simply installing the Kudoso app on the device.  The second part uses the Konfigurator helper program to configure the device.  This works identically but MUCH EASIER than Apple's own Configurator program.  In this step we'll install an MDM (Mobile Device Management) profile AND make the device a SUPERVISED device.  One major difference between Apple Configurator and Kudoso Konfigurator is that Kudoso's Konfigurator DOES NOT wipe your device when putting it into Supervised mode.  You can also use Konfigurator to remove the Supervided mode and the MDM profile.

Part 1: Setup the app on the device

  1. Install the Kudoso app on the device by accessing the App Store and installing Kudoso
  2. Launch the app and login on the device using your PARENT account (email and password)
  3. Choose a unique name for this device (and remember it, you'll need this information later)
  4. When the app asks you if you'd like to make this device managed, click YES
  5. You can now safely exit the app by pressing the HOME button

Part 2: Configure the device with Konfigurator

  1. On your Mac or Windows computer, you will need iTunes.  If you do not already have it, please install iTunes from Apple and connect your device. Your computer must be "Trusted" by your device so if you are prompted to trust this computer, say Yes.
  2. On your Mac or Windows computer, install Konfigurator (downloadable from https://www.kudoso.com/downloads)
  3. Launch Konfigurator (either from the Start menu on Windows or from the Applications folder on a Mac)
  4. Login to Kudoso using your email address and password
  5. Connect the device to the computer and follow the simple instructions
  6. When Konfigurator is finished, the device will reboot and you'll need to follow the prompts from Apple to finish "upgrading" your device.

Your device is now managed, you should receive a push notifcation regarding the successful setup.  You can now use your parent interface to manage application restrictions, screen time limits, blackouts and bedtimes.

We recommend ALSO installing the Kudoso Safe Browser as the ONLY internet browser on the device.  This will ensure your kid's internet usage is filtered and safe.

How do I set up a new Android or Kindle device to be managed by Kudoso?

Setting up a new Android or Kindle device to be managed by Kudoso is very simple, just follow these instructions:

  1. Install the Kudoso app from the Google Play store (android devices) or Amazon App store (kindle devices)
  2. Launch the Kudoso app.  Ensure you ACCEPT the permissions to make Kudoso a device administrator (we promise we will not erase any information on your device even though Android permissions will tell you that we can)
  3. Follow the instructions to enable the Accessibility mode for Kudoso
  4. Press Android BACK button twice to return to the Kudoso App
  5. Login using your parent email address and password
  6. When prompted, select a unqiue and memorable name for this device
  7. When prompted, select YES to make this device managed
  8. On some Android devices, you will need to manually set the Kudoso app as a Device Administrator once - even though we do this programmatically when the app launches, Android requires the user to manually set this once for the setting to remain the next time the device is restarted.  Here is a quick video of the process:

The application will notify you that the setup is complete and will return the Member Chooser login page.  The device is now managed and will enforce app restrictions, screen time limits, blackouts and bedtimes.

How do I setup my macOS computer as a managed Kudoso device?

To setup your macOS computer as a managed Kudoso device, follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the macOS installer package from https://www.kudoso.com/downloads
  2. Run the installer, supply the macOS adminstrator credentials when prompted
  3. When the installer completes, open the Kudoso app from the Applications folder in Finder
  4. Supply your Kudoso parent account email address and password in the initial dialog, this will register the device and bring up the normal Member Chooser login screen.
  5. Log in under your parent account
  6. Click the large "Make this device managed" button

Once the device is managed, you can now logout and the rest assured that the device is now managed and will enforce app restrictions, screen time limits, blackouts and bedtimes.

Some notes about the current macOS app:

  • Content filtering is not currently supported on the macOS application, only screen time limits are currently enforced.
  • We do not support multiple computer accounts right now (its coming) - so if your computer has multiple accounts Kudoso will still run and enforce the restrictions but kids will need to login to kudoso and their computer account each time
  • There are no parent management screens for the macOS app currently, please continue to use your mobile or tablet app to manage Kudoso.

  6. Click the large "Make this device managed" button

Once the device is managed, you can now logout and the rest assured that the device is now managed and will enforce app restrictions, screen time limits, blackouts and bedtimes.

Some notes about the current Windows app:

  • Content filtering is not currently supported on the Windows application, only screen time limits are currently enforced.
  • We do not support multiple computer accounts right now (its coming) - so if your computer has multiple accounts Kudoso will still run and enforce the restrictions but kids will need to login to kudoso and their computer account each time
  • Because Windows has some inherent security flaws, you CANNOT run Kudoso under the main adminstrator account.  Please create a normal (unprivileged) account for your children to use and make sure they do not have the Adminstrator account password or they can disable/uninstall Kudoso.
  • There are no parent management screens for the Windows app currently, please continue to use your mobile or tablet app to manage Kudoso.

What does it mean for a device to be Supervised? How do I un-supervise a device?

Supervise mode is specific to iOS devices and means that your device has succesfully installed the MDM (Mobile Device Management) profile using the Konfigurator process. For instructions on how set up a device using Konfigurator, please follow this link

When your devise is supervised, you will see a message on the Lock or Settings screen that says "This device is managed by Kudoso".  Now your device is ready to use Kudoso's Screentime Management and App Locking features.

To take a device out of supervised mode, thereby uninstalling the MDM profile, you must start Konfigurator on your computer. Konfigurator will detect that your device is managed and offer you the option to go through the unmamage process.

I am getting error code -105 from Konfigurator, what should I do?

Konfigurator uses iOS's built in backup and restore protocol to configure your device.  It makes a backup of the iOS device to the computer, makes the necessary modifications, and then restores the information back to the device.   Because the restore process is designed by Apple to help you replace or upgrade your iOS device, it requires a certain amount of free space on the iOS device in order to work properly.  We cannot calculate the needed amount due to Apple's compression and protocol.  The -105 error basically means that there was not enough free space to finish, so the restore process is aborted.

We find that this usually happens when the device is more than 2/3 full of USER data - not apps.  User data are things like photos, videos, and app storage (data and documents inside an app).  For example, an app like VideoFX may have many gigabytes of user video files stored.  If you free up some of this User Data by removing the photos and videos (after you sync them to your computer!) then the process will complete successfully.  If Konfigurator still hits the -105 error, it may be necessary to remove one or two of the larges apps (see them listed in General-> Storage & iCloud Usage -> Manage Storage), complete the Konfigurator process, and then re-install the apps from the app store.

How do I assign devices to my Kudoso Plug Outlets?

You will need to associate devices with each outlet on the Kudoso Plug.  If you haven't added a device record for your HDTV or Game Console, lets do that first:

  1. From the Devices menu, press the "+" icon in the upper right hand corner to add a new device.
  2. Give the device a unique name and then select the device type from the drop down list.
  3. New devices are "unmanaged" to start but need to be managed to associate them with a Plug, so click on the Unmanaged device list, find the device you addeded, click it, set the Managed switch to On, and the click Save in the upper right hand corner.

Now that you have the devices, we need to associate them with the Plug Outlets since each outlet is independently controlled.

  1. From the Devices menu, click on the Managed Devices tab
  2. Scroll to the bottom to find your Plug.
  3. Click the "Assign Device" label next to one of the outlet numbers.
  4. Select the device you would like to associate with the selected outlet.

Now, the HDTV and Game Console work like any other managed device in Kudoso.  When your child would like to start an activity on the device, they need to use their phone, tablet or computer to log into Kudoso, select the Screen Time icon, select the Televsion and Game Console as their devices of choice, and start a Screen Time Activity.
